Supporting the Cancer Society

Make a difference for local people living with cancer

Every day, 63 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. By fundraising through Walking Stars, you can support local people living with cancer. The Cancer Society provides vital services to people living with cancer and relies on the generosity of the public to keep those services available.

Care and support for patients and families

By fundraising for the Cancer Society through Walking Stars, you will help provide free care and support for people with cancer and their families/wh?nau. Here are some of the vital services you are helping to provide for people in need:

Nurses who visit patients and families in their homes to give practical information and support to help them manage throughout treatment.

The Cancer Information Service, which helps patients and their loved ones find out more about all types of cancer, treatments and side effects, and how to cope. This service includes online resources, information booklets, a library and a helpline where you can speak with a cancer nurse.

A free psychology service to help patients and their families/wh?nau cope with emotions during and after cancer treatment, including individual sessions and group programmes.

Free transport for people who are finding it difficult to get to and from their cancer treatment.

Free accommodation for those who need to travel a long distance from home to get cancer treatment.

The Cancer Society receives no government funding to provide these free services. It’s only through the generosity of donors and fundraisers like you that we can continue to help people with cancer and their families/wh?nau when they need it most.

Life-saving cancer research

Thanks to our donors and fundraisers, the Cancer Society is able to contribute over $2.4 million each year towards this ground-breaking work to improve the survival rates of many different types of cancer. This makes the Cancer Society the single biggest private funder of cancer research in New Zealand.

Creating a future with less cancer

At the Cancer Society, we’re committed to preventing cancer by raising awareness about risk factors, encouraging early detection and working with decision makers to improve the health of our communities.

With the help of our donors and fundraisers, we’re striving to create a future with less cancer with work in the following key areas:

  • Reducing smoking in New Zealand and working towards a Smoke-free Aotearoa by 2025.
  • SunSmart campaigns and advocacy to educate New Zealanders about sun safety and reducing their risk of skin cancer.

You can be part of this important
work by taking part in Walking Stars.
