Gale force winds didn’t dampen the spirits of the 750 participants who took part in Wellington’s inaugural Walking Stars on Saturday 16th November.
The atmosphere was electric. Walkers sang, danced and laughed their way through 21 kilometres of the Wellington CBD, passing Parliament, the Basin Reserve, Westpac Stadium, Te Papa, and the Cancer Society. There was an incredible volunteer army for this event. With over 97 marshals and others who were all supportive and energetic, cheering on every single person who passed them.
The volunteers were a diverse mix of university students, retirees, families, and even a Hungarian dance troop. It was fantastic seeing them develop friendships formed at the volunteer inductions.
Next year, we won’t make the walkers brave Courtenay Place quite so late at night. We’ll aim for some spare marshals to gap-fill (the weather seemed to cause some no shows!).
The highlight was watching walkers cross the finish line and get their medals, having helped us raised $148,000 while achieving their fitness goals.
